ok, so i am learning automotive on my own. the only guidance i have is street rodder tech articles so im still kind of a retardicon when it come to working on cars. keep this in mind as i ask this question.
how long do i have to wait before adding gear oil to my rear axle? i used that RTV silicone stuff and waited 24 hours before adding gear oil the first time. It ended up leaking. i thought well maybe i didnt apply enough of a bead. i re did it and again waited 24 hours and added oil again. again it leaked out. so what am i doing wrong?

Just read your post today, hopefully you'll check back.
First, are you using a gasket as well as ATV? If not it may be leaking because without the added thickness of a gasket the cover does not tighten securely against the housing. Another possibility is that one of the mating surfaces is slightly warped (another thing a gasket/sealer combination might solve). I've used RTV and filled the rear with lube within minutes with no leaks.

One thing about using silicone. You have to allow it to "skin" or dry for a few minutes before you assemble parts. Put a bead on each surface and let it set for a few mintues than assemble the parts and do not tighten the bolts super tight. Most silicone comes with instructions on how to use it. Read and follow them you should have no problems.

do not let it "skin" before assembly. a continuous bead on one surface should suffice. be sure that you are applying the bead inboard of the bolt holes otherwise gear oil will seep out around the bolts. as far as time forletting the silocoln cure, I have added gear oil imediatly after resealing the cover and had no problems. also do not use silicon with a gasket -either one or the other. one thing you may want to check is that the bolt holes have bent in from repeated tightening ot the bolts this can be fixed by lightly tapping them back into shape with a ball pean hammer. if you are using a gasket make sure you are not over tightening it this will cause the gasket to split and leak. good luck and Im sorry you diddn't get more helpful advice sooner.
