Ok here we go, I am new to the street rod world but I have just purchased a 1994 GMC extended cab 1500 truck, it is two wheel drive and I am ready to start building a street rod out of this truck, the truck is bone stock and is very clean BUT the tranny is pretty much shot! yeah it will move but I only have two gears, with all of that said I am ready to purchase a new tranny so I can move this thing around town and get this project going my way. I am not real sure what tranny in in the truck (it is origional) but I dont know what I am looking at????? my question is WHAT TRANNY SHOULD I PUT IN THE TRUCK??? I am wanting to install a tranny that will work with the OEM factory engine so I can get this truck around town and get everyhting that I need done to the truck but yet I want to remove the factory engine and install a pretty Hot small block at a later date! so what can I drop in NOW that will work with a pain ol' simple small black with a carb at a later date? I was thinking that I would just drop in a street strip tranny from JEGS and modify the cross member and drop in a floor mounted shifter from LOKAR and get this thing going and yet it would work when I swap out the engine...I am looking for all of the advise that I can get so if you have been here before or know where to start please reply and point me in the right direction,, I only want to do this one time and do it right,

Thanks for taking the time to read

Larry,

Just get the tranny in your truck rebuilt.  A TH350, OR TH400 will make your computer go batshit, and you'll be loosing overdrive, which is a nice thing to have.

Once you 86 the stock motor for a traditional, hopped up, carbureted, non computer smallblock, the original transmission (4L60E) can be used with that engine by using an electronic control box from one of the transmission specialist companies, and you'll still have your overdrive.

I tend to agree with Ace. I would probably just re-install the old box for now. I did the same for my truck just for now while I was waiting to decide what the final motor will be . I do like the TH400 better, there is less problems with it. But you don't have the over drive. I just through in a good second hand box for now ( around $300US). This got me mobile while I got all the other work done. I would do a lot more research on the trannies before you spend the big bucks.

Man, that will take some sort of skill to do. I guess once you do it you can slide down easier.
Anyway enough of the side-tracking.....good onya Johny , you through out the rhythem. Now focus and get back to the Tranny problem. I guess a man can throw in a good ol' 3 on the tree. I started up my whipper snipper days with one of those and to make it worse it had the CRASH first.

I know one of the muncies is the sort after one, I think it was the one they through in the early Camero. I'd have to check with a buddy of mine, he's the master on that topic.
