I have 33 Ford Vicky with a 350 Chevy small block and after driving it for a while the fan comes on to cool the engine but the fan noise sounds like a jet taking off. It is unusually loud and is noticable to anyone down the street. I've been told it is necessary to cool the motor and is caused by the cowling around the radiator/fan, however it seems excessive.

welcome to the forum...
a few additional pieces of info are needed....
what kind of fan are we talking about..
do you have an electric radiator cooling fan????
do you have a water pump mounted belt drive fan.. that might have a fan clutch to cycle the fan on and off as the hot coolant gets circulated into the radiator as the thermostat opens and closes..
do you have a cell phone that takes video..????? do you have a DIgital cam corder... where you could take a short video of the problem and post it to either youtube or Photobucket dot com... both are free... this way we will be able to hear what you are hearing and perhaps see it also..
some still pictures of the fan blade also.. either belt driven or electric.. would help also..

Thanks for your good questions and I will get back to you on each of them - just give me a day or so as I am now out of the country traveling.
