Have a 1964 Chevelle convertible, 283 Auto. What engine would be the most affordable and easiest too install. I want to keep the bench seat. Will a TH350 transmission fit in the same place as the Power Glide. The upgrade of the engine/transmission is to improve the performance and fuel mileage. It will not be raced.Thank you for the much needed help.
yes... a TH350 will replace the powerglide.. there is a difference in the shifter detent in either the steering column or the floor shifter which ever you have.. easily available reproductions are available.. they also sell versions to install 700R4s and allow the shifter to work properly.. now... which 283 do you have...??? the 283 2barrel or 4 barrel???J 8-283 195 285 3-Speed Manual 2 BCJA 8-283 195 285 4-Speed Manual 2 BCJD 8-283 195 285 Powerglide 2 BCJG 8-283 220 295 Powerglide 4 BCJH 8-283 220 295 3 & 4-Speed Manual 4 BCthere is a LOT you can do to a 283 to pep it up... and less cubic inches usually result in better MPG.. upgrading to one of the multiple electronic ignition systems.. you will want to chart the 283 advance curve with an adjustable timing light and a vacuum gauge before removing the distributer.. as replacement distributers are not going to be curved for optimal 283 engine operation.. this gets involved..if you have the 2 barrel version.. that is a 2G rochester and very tunable. which motor is cheepest ... usually a 350 chevy..
