Has any one tried the over the counter fuel injector cleaners? I've heard from the radio car shows that the best cleaners are the ones used by dealers. They didn't recommend the over the counter cleaners - but maybe they are covering for their mechanic friends. Any comments?
this is one way i clean injectors.. for in the tank fuel injection cleaner.. i personally prefer B12 chem tool #0116 this pours into the fuel tank using a transmission funnel.. so you don't drip on paint.. be sure that when you pour this in and are out where is safe to do so.. that you get up to close to freeway speed and are heading up a hill or even getting on the freeway.. that you MASH the throttle wide open for a few seconds.. this increases the fuel injector pulse width and allows more crud to flow out of the injector..
follow instructions...many years ago.. i got a call from a shop.. a car was smoking like crazy.. i looked at the brick wall of smoke coming out the back.. disconnected the fuel injection system.. blew out the fuel rail. hooked it up to the shops carbon clean machine.. with fresh gas that i brought.. when i started the car on the carbon clean machine with just gasoline.. the smoke cleared up.. i ask the tech to remove the fuel tank.. drain it.. blow out the rest of the lines.. replace it and put fresh gasoline in it. he said ok.. 2 days later.. its still smoking when they call me.. i get there.. look around the shop for the gasoline they removed.. where is it.. the tech said.. he got rid of it.. where.. what did you do with it.. put it in another car. pour it down the drain.. where is it.. . i kinda stood on his toes and leaned him backwards over the fender as i could not get a straight answer from him.. he finally admitted. that he had dropped the tank.. blew out the fuel lines. drained the tank. but the gasoline looked perfect so they put it back in.. at that exact moment the car owner walked up.. it was the bosses cousin.. i ask him what he did just before it started smoking.. he said.. he had put 5 bucks worth of gas in it.. ok.. thats 2.5 gallons.. and how much was in the car.. an 1/8 of a tank.. what else.. did you put injector cleaner in it.. .. well.. yes.. how many.. he kept saying just one.. so i stood on his toes and leaned him backwards over the fender. he finally admitted to putting in 5 bottles. as he really wanted his injectors clean.. you have to understand.. before you accuse me of abuse. the head had been off this engine and sent to 2 different machine shops for valve jobs.. the injectors had been replaced twice.. the computer had been replaced.. and a whole bunch of other parts that did not fix the car before i got there and figured out it was the gasoline. so.. please follow instructions on the container..
that was a great shop to help out at.. bringing it out of the stone ages and shocking them into the electronics age.. almost caused the owner a heart attach. said about 1988 that we really should have a scan tool. it will save a LOT of time.. he got on the tool truck.. ask how much the scan tool was.. $1,800 bucks.. he grabbed his chest and fell off the truck.. the tool guy felt so bad. he did not even ask for his payment that week.. their lead tech was a guy from peru.. his brother was up from peru and attending a body and paint course at a local trade school.. the brother used to give me a hard time around the shop. thinking i don't know as much as his brother.. i said to him.. say. doing body work in peru is dangerous.. how do you do it without starting a stampede.. he ask .. what are you talking about.. i went on to say straight faced.. well. i can understand that you might be able to spread bondo on llamas but how to you grind it smooth without starting a stampede. he was so mad.. but everybody in the shop was laughing so hard they were doubled over laughing..
